Color Spread 699

This is the color spread of chapter 699. According to the details which Oda revealed on the Color Walk, the Mugiwara crew is an Order of Chivalry wandering aimlessly. One day, they encountered an evil dragon and they just kicked its ass. To the people they have saved, Luffy: “if you want to thank us, give us meat!” Nami: “And the treasure as well!”

Have you ever wonder how exactly Oda designed their appearances in a certain color spread? Did their costumed images just jump out from nowhere in Oda’s mind? I don’t think so. There must be somewhat vague origins corresponding to each of them before he starts drawing them. In this case, it might be…

Joan of Arc and Gilles de Rais? One was the most well-known heroine among the European histories, and one was her companion-in-arms (no conclusions of their relationship being romantic or not) who had a name worse than the devil. It is the way that Robin is armored, the pattern on Zoro’s chest and standing together that gave me the deja vu.

What about them? When it comes to chivalry stories in the Middle Ages, the Knights of the Round Table must spring to mind. King Arthur and Guinevere? Though Nami is sitting on the armrest of Luffy’s chair, she does not entirely look like a queen (there’s no crown on her head.) It’s kind of interesting. A thought: maybe she doesn’t like the role as a queen so much?

Lancelot? The one who suits the role as a knight most is Sanji! He’s definitely our man as Lancelot, King Arthur’s chief knight! In the story, Guinevere had an extraordinarily romantic affair with him, and romance is the most conspicuous feature of Sanji’s character. Could it be a reference to the main story?
